Frequently Asked Questions - Grey Warbler Studio

How do I make a tattoo booking enquiry?

Please check out our ‘Artist Portfolios’ for any updates on when our artist’s bookings are opening. Email the following info ‘on’ or ‘after’ the bookings open date- 1- Your full name and number. 2- A basic description of the subject matter you want included in your tattoo design. 3- A general idea of the size and placement you imagine your new tattoo to be. 4- Any reference photos you want to include that you think will help get your ideas across, please feel free to label the photo and write a small description about what you like about the photo. E.g in photo1 I like the placement and size of this tattoo. In photo2 I like the shape of this bumblebee etc.

For more info on the booking process, check out ‘The Tattoo Process’.

Do you do walk in tattoos or will I need to make an appointment?

We are a private appointment only studio. The front door will stay locked whilst we are working.

What are Katy’s tattoo rates?
Katy charges $290 per hour. She also has a day rate option of $1500, this consists of being tattooed from 10.30am to 5.30pm(ish). If your tattoo takes less time then the day rate option then you would be charged via her hourly rate. She takes $290 deposits via internet banking and this comes off the price of the tattoo on the day.

Can I book in for a tattoo with Katy if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Katy will not knowingly tattoo a pregnant person out of an abundance of caution. It is important to understand the immense change that your body is going through during pregnancy and there is no need to put it under any more stress than this! We also recommend you wait until your baby is 9 to 12 months old and not wholly dependent on breast milk before you get a new tattoo.

Is it ok for me to use a numbing cream in preparation for my tattoo?

Unfortunately we have found numbing cream very unpredictable to work with in the past and would appreciate that it isn’t used on your skin prior to the tattoo appointment. We are happy for people to take Panadol or other pain medication as prescribed, otherwise we highly suggest bringing ‘in ear’ distractions to take your mind off the pain.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

We do not offer gift vouchers as they would mean that people could skip the initial booking process.

Where is the Grey Warbler Studio located?

Grey Warbler Studio is located at ‘Shop 5, 11 Marina Road, Tutukaka, Whangārei, 0173’, neighbours with The Tutukaka Gallery. The area has security cameras with plenty of free parking outside.

Can I get a tattoo if I am under 18?
You must be 18 or over to have a tattoo and ID will be required on the day of your appointment.

Does the tattoo rate include the drawing of the design?    Absolutely!! :)

Does Katy offer colour tattoos?                                Katy and Wade have discontinued doing colour in their tattoo work but will happily add white highlights.

Does Katy offer cover up tattoos?

Because their tattoo styles are fine line, it might be a bit trickier to cover your existing work without a little bit of laser removal treatment to start with. You are welcome to send through your email enquiry when their bookings open next with a photo of the existing piece you are wanting to cover up- however please be aware that they may ask you to go for laser removal treatments first, or simply recommend an artist who does bolder work.

Can Katy tattoo over scar tissue?

Absolutely, however we ask for it to have been healed well over a year- we may require a photo to gain a better understanding of the level of scarring we are working over.

Can I bring a support person with me?                                    Yes you most certainly can, as long as they are respectful of the studio and of our artists working. We prefer this to be a calming space to work in, for both the artist and the client, so please be mindful of this. If you are considering bringing your child along with you, ask yourself if you think you will find it relaxing, are they ok with distracting themselves for a long period of time without tapping their feet etc.

What ink brands do you use? Are they vegan friendly?

We use Dynamic black, Intenze, and Eternal ink. These brands are all highly reputable in the tattoo industry worldwide & vegan.
